CLR: A History of Innovation

Sam Cobb at work

Sam Cobb, a pioneer in IOL
One of the pioneers in intraocular lens development is Sam Cobb. Working under Peter Lahay and Marvin Murphy at IOLab, Sam helped develop the IOL as it is today.

With Marvin Murphy, Cobb co-founded Vision Technology Inc. (VTI) and in 1989, Cobb founded Ophthalmic Innovations International Inc. (OII).

Cobb streamlined the use of computer-operated machines to produce high-quality IOLs at remarkably low cost. This computerized method has today become the industry standard.

OII grew into a well-known manufacturer of intraocular lenses, where it remains today.

CLR founded in 1997
After piloting the growth of OII into a corporate fixture, Cobb sold the company and founded CLR Medicals to research and develop new viscoelastiics.

With his knowledge of IOL use, Sam has perfected a series of formulations that safely protect delicate eye tissue from dehydration, inflammation, and cavity collapse while a cataract is surgically replaced.

This process has led CLR to ISO 9001 and 13485, 4 CE marks, and a family of unique viscoelastic products.

Searching for perfection
As an innovator, Sam Cobb is always thinking. New ideas and product improvements are constantly being researched in the CLR lab. These new innovations will help ophthalmic surgeons help their patients.

Plant expanding 25%
"Response to CLR' product family has been gratifying," said CEO Sam Cobb, Jr. "We are now expanding our manufacturing facility by 25% to meet increased orders." During a recession, this is good news.
